Not really had time to write much recently, been busy with work and other things.
Day of the Kamikaze
Finally got to watch this when it was repeated on More4 (it was originally shown on Channel 4 a couple of months back).
It was pretty interesting, and quite sad to see how many young Japanese were pressured into becoming kamikaze pilots due to peer pressure. One particular story was very sad, in that a young man (who was engaged) became a kamikaze. On the day he flew out to his death, his family and fiancee’s family held the wedding ceremony in his abscence (he was represented by a photograph). The wedding was then followed by his funeral.
Yuko saw some of this programme, and she told me how some of her relatives (old ones obviously) were involved. One of her great aunts was one of the many women who were asked by the Japanese government to write letters to the younger, single men. Apparently, they would also clip their pubic hair, and said that in the letters too!
She never met the kamikaze she was asked to write letters to.
Can you make some more for us!?
He doesn’t get it!?!?
“We do need the oil coming out of the North Sea, we do need to encourage the new exploration. That is more expensive to do. That is why I hope that these profits are going to be invested in getting more oil out of the North Sea,”
… and how are you going to get more oil out of the North Sea, when there is only a finite amount of it.
