Promoting Climate Change Awareness – How NOT to do it!

Good God!!! What a complete and utter f£$k up!!

For some reason, the 10:10 organisation seemed to thing this would be a good idea about marketing the 10:10 concept to try and cut Carbon Emissions (they are coming from a Climate Change perspective, rather than Peak Oil/Energy Security point of view).

Me, I think this is absolutely awful. It’s a prime example of how to appear ‘preachy’ to sceptics and you end up putting people off. Indeed, by 18:00 this evening (UK time), it seems that 10:10 had realised what a monumental f*£k up they had made with it. This is the ammunition that people who are anti-anything-vaguely-green have wanted to use.

I mean, even most sane enviromentalists are saying things like

As an keen environmentalist I wish to disassociate myself from this film.

10:10 are idiots — not because of what they stand for but because they allowed some celebrity film makers to talk them into agreeing to this film. It has put the environmental movement back by more than the deniaiists could have hoped for in their wildest dreams. I’m appalled and angry.

This film — and the stupidity of the client that permitted it — will be talked of in advertising circles for all time. Words fail me.

This is what 10:10 had to say after realising they’d pissed off non-environmentalists and environmentalists alike…

6pm update: 10:10 has released the following statement.

Sorry.
Today we put up a mini-movie about 10:10 and climate change called ‘No Pressure’.

With climate change becoming increasingly threatening, and decreasingly talked about in the media, we wanted to find a way to bring this critical issue back into the headlines whilst making people laugh. We were therefore delighted when Britain’s leading comedy writer, Richard Curtis – writer of Blackadder, Four Weddings, Notting Hill and many others – agreed to write a short film for the 10:10 campaign. Many people found the resulting film extremely funny, but unfortunately some didn’t and we sincerely apologise to anybody we have offended.

As a result of these concerns we’ve taken it off our website.

We’d like to thank the 50+ film professionals and 40+ actors and extras and who gave their time and equipment to the film for free. We greatly value your contributions and the tremendous enthusiasm and professionalism you brought to the project.

At 10:10 we’re all about trying new and creative ways of getting people to take action on climate change. Unfortunately in this instance we missed the mark. Oh well, we live and learn.

Onwards and upwards,

Eugenie, Franny, Daniel, Lizzie and the whole 10:10 team

Anyway, here’s the video. Does it inspire you to cut your carbon emissions?

I AM SO PISSED OFF WITH THIS!!!

The City stirs and sees the danger?

Peak Oil

Two quite interesting stories in the press. First up is the Guardian’s reporting of Lloyds of London’s acknowledgment of Peak Oil.

One of the City’s most respected institutions has warned of “catastrophic consequences” for businesses that fail to prepare for a world of increasing oil scarcity and a lower carbon economy.

The Lloyd’s insurance market and the highly regarded Royal Institute of International Affairs, known as Chatham House, says Britain needs to be ready for “peak oil” and disrupted energy supplies at a time of soaring fuel demand in China and India, constraints on production caused by the BP oil spill and political moves to cut CO2 to halt global warming.

“Companies which are able to take advantage of this new energy reality will increase both their resilience and competitiveness. Failure to do so could lead to expensive and potentially catastrophic consequences,” says the Lloyd’s and Chatham House report “Sustainable energy security: strategic risks and opportunities for business”.

Japan, low tech country?

Quite an interesting article which is a bit of an overview of the paradox of Japan being consider to be high-tech… yet being completely backward sometimes when it comes to technology.

Hmmm, interesting

Japan to Build Naval Base in Djibouti.

More to this than meets the eye?

Embedded Energy

Excellent video. Love the seriously geeky big time analysis environmental impact of wiping up a spillage of mayonnaise from the floor :)

Other stuff

Considering this I feel was a rather big story, I was surprised and annoyed that it never appeared anyway in the front pages, or even lead on the front page of the business section.

And finally, ahhh, gotta love Public-Sector waste and inefficiency (there’s some things that deserve to be too important and need to be under national control, yet somethings should just be kept out of the public sector).
This is the story of Cycle-Route planning!
