Sit and Shit
At work, sometimes I think that I’m not enough polite when I ask customers for their table number in the cafe. So I asked Gavin, how I can be more polite. He told me “Which table number are you sitting at?”. I tried to say that, but I had a little problem again! “Oh! Yuko, your SIT is sounding SHIT, not SIT”… I can’t pronounce properly.
If I’m really carefully, I’m a bit better but when I talk, I pronounce “SHIT”.
いつもテーブル番号をお客さんに聞く時に丁寧じゃないなぁと思っていた。だからGavinにもう少し丁寧な言い方を教えてもらった。
“Which table number are you sitting at?”
言ってみたら、やっぱりいつもの問題ですよ！
「優子、発音が”う○こ”になってる。”座る”じゃない」
ちゃんと発音出来ません。
すごく気をつけてマシになるくらいで、きっと会話の中では”う○こ”になってしまうと思う。
Wales here…
Here in Wales there is a special TV channel, S4C.
Their programmes are almost all Welsh. I don’t know Welsh so I don’t watch usually… but I try to watch.
Sometimes English words are used, so I understand those… well, not always understand, really…
I’m interested in Welsh but it’s so difficult to spell and pronunce!
I bought Japanese-Welsh book and English-Welsh book. The Japanese version is more difficult to understand than English one.
Welsh is a rare language so if I could learn it, it could be cool…
ここはウェールズです。だからS4Cというテレビ局があって、殆どの番組がウェールズ語な訳です。ウェールズ語は全く解らないから、見ることもないんだけど・・・たまに見てみるけど、いくつか英語と同じ単語もあるみたいで、それしか聞き取れない←それって、ほんとに解ってる訳じゃないからって突っ込まれそうだが・・・
興味はあるんだけれど、綴りも発音も難しい！勉強してみようと英語版と日本語版のウェールズ語の本を買ったけれど、日本語版は英語版よりも理解し難い。
レアな言語だから話せたらかっこいいんだけどなー・・・
Numbers
I don’t like numbers. If I see a line of numbers, I ignore it or understand it… I’ve hated arithmetic and maths so I’m stuck when translating Japanese into English.
For example, reading a phone number, I say 5 figures then take breath, and then I say the other numbers…
I once did this with an acquaintance, whose face then changed to a puzzled look. (Damn!! It’s Japanese!).
I then concentrate, then say the numbers falteringly.
When I told them perfectly, I felt satisfied and relief, but then I couldn’t always hear what an acquaintance said sometimes. So usually I nod randomly or ask again.
I also find it difficult to remember after numbers larger than 10,000.
数字はどうも苦手だ。数字がたくさん並んでいるのを見ると拒否反応が出てしまう・・・昔から算数・数学は駄目。だからなのか、数字を英語に置換える時にも問題が起る。例えば電話番号を伝える時、５桁くらいまで言って一息ついて残りの番号を言い始めると相手が不可解な顔をする。(はっ！！日本語ではないか！)そして改めて気を引締め、たどたどしく番号を言う。ちゃんと言えた時はほんのり満足気になってしまったり、ホッとし過ぎて、その後に人が言ってることが聞き取れないこともよくあったりする。(←そんな時、いい加減に相槌を打ったり、聞き直したりする自分がよくある光景)
また、千の位から先の英語も出てこない。最近やっとこ万の位が頭に刷込まれたところだ。
